Cladding. Real Wood vs Composite?
When considering which cladding to install on your garden room it is important to select the best material for your unique project. Traditionally, wood cladding has been a popular choice due to its natural charm and adds a traditional look to your project and is often cheaper to purchase .
However, technological advancements have introduced composite cladding as a more durable, low maintenance and cost effective alternative.
Discover the differences between wood and composite cladding.

Composite Cladding
Composite Cladding can be installed either horizontally or vertically and will instantly transform the exterior walls of any domestic or commercial building

Traditional timber look, without the hassle of ongoing maintenance.

Colours include Charcoal, Teak, Light Grey, Ivory, Olive Green, Coffee, Redwood and Stone Grey

Main advantages of composite cladding
Low-maintenance
Unlike timber, composite wall cladding is exceptionally low maintenance, and doesn't require any routine painting, staining, sealing, or sanding. It's also durable and long-lasting, and won't rot, crack, splinter, or swell like real wood cladding.
Versatile
Composite cladding offers a variety of colours and textures, making it easy to find the perfect match for your home's individual style. It also features a wood grain finish, which truly rivals the look of real wood siding.
Eco-friendly
Made from recycled materials, it is a sustainable and eco-friendly option for homeowners who want to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising on quality. Made from ethically sourced materials including scrap wood fibre and plastic that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Durable and Long-lasting
Resistant to decay, insect infestations, and warping. Plus, they're stain and scratch resistant, ensuring that your home looks great for years to come.
Traditional timber cladding
We offer a wide range of styles and handles to choose from, making it easy for you to find the perfect match.

Have the doors already? No Problem, We can still provide the same great service without suppling the hardware.

Sit back, relax, and let us take care of all the hard work for you.

Main advantages of timber cladding
Naturally beautiful
Wood cladding possesses an inherent charm, exudes warmth and authenticity. Unlike composite, wood weathers over the seasons creating the timber to mould to its surroundings.
100% ecological
Timber products are 100% natural and the production process consists of just steam, pressure, and heat. It’s a completely ecological, natural process from start to finish.
Health benefits
Timber cladding has been shown to have health benefits from reducing stress to increasing productivity. Whether designing a hospital or education centre, architects can impress by incorporating timber cladding and letting users reap the benefits.
Naturally Changes Over Time
Weathering is the process whereby timber cladding changes in appearance over time due to the impact of environmental conditions. While this may sound like a damaging thing, weathering can be a wonderful development, naturally changing the appearance of your cladding giving it a gorgeous grey sheen.

FAQ's
-
How high can my garden room be?Under permitted development regulations, garden rooms with flat or low-pitch roofs must not exceed a maximum height of 2.5 meters. However, if the structure is positioned at least 2 meters away from all property boundaries, the height allowance increases—up to 3 meters at the front, sloping to 2.5 meters at the rear (single-pitch roof). This design is especially well-suited for garden gyms, providing the additional headroom often required for exercise equipment.
-
Do I need building control approval for a garden room?In most cases, no. Building control approval is not required for garden rooms up to 15m², as long as they do not include any sleeping accommodation. For garden rooms between 15m² and 30m², approval is still not needed if the structure is placed at least 1 meter from all boundaries—or, if closer, it's built using substantially non-combustible materials.
-
Does my garden need to be completely flat? No, your garden doesn’t need to be level. We take care of all necessary groundwork to ensure your garden room has a stable and secure foundation, regardless of variations in ground height. In most cases, we use a heavy-duty galvanised ground screw system, with screw lengths tailored to the ground conditions—typically 1.2 meters. For example, a 5m x 3m garden room generally requires around 15 ground screws, each supporting up to 1.5 tonnes. If you plan to use the space as a gym or for other heavy equipment, we recommend upgrading to a solid concrete base for added load-bearing capacity.
-
Will my garden room require any maintenance? No—our garden rooms are designed to be virtually maintenance-free. If you choose composite cladding, it requires zero upkeep and has a typical lifespan of 25 years. For those opting for Western Red Cedar cladding, you're getting a naturally durable material with a lifespan of 40+ years and strong resistance to decay. Cedar is also 100% maintenance-free, though it will gradually weather to a silvery tone. If you prefer to preserve its rich red and brown hues, you can apply a UV-protective oil shortly after installation. This treatment typically needs to be reapplied every 4–5 years, depending on the product used.
-
Is a gap required between the garden room and the fence?Yes, we typically require a 0.5m gap between the garden room and the fence to allow space for construction and cladding. However, if you prefer the garden room to sit closer to the boundary, it's possible to temporarily remove the fence to facilitate the build. That said, we recommend leaving a small gap where possible to prevent moisture build-up and to avoid the structure appearing cramped in the corner of your garden. If fence removal is needed, it must be arranged and completed by you before our team arrives on site.
-
How long will it take to install my dream garden room?We know you're excited to see your new garden room come to life—and so are we! While the exact timeline depends on the size, design, and any custom upgrades you've chosen, most installations are completed in around 15 days. Our expert team works efficiently to deliver top-quality craftsmanship, rain or shine. We’re all about getting you into your new space as quickly as possible—without ever cutting corners.
-
Will my garden room have electricity? Absolutely!Every garden room comes fully kitted out with an electrics package—that means a mains consumer unit, double sockets, LED lighting, and a light switch, all neatly installed in classic white (unless you fancy something different!). All wiring is hidden within the timber framework, so everything looks sleek and seamless. The only thing you’ll need to arrange separately is the connection from your home to the garden room via an armoured power cable. Since every property is unique, our expert on-site electrician can quote this for you, or you’re welcome to use your own electrician once the build is complete. Either way, we leave everything ready for a simple, stress-free connection.
-
Limited garden access? No problem!Think your garden’s too tricky to reach? Think again. We’ve tackled all kinds of challenging spaces and pulled off stunning installs in the most unexpected spots. As long as we can get the biggest timber section in, the rest is a breeze. Our team is creative, experienced, and always up for the challenge—so don’t count yourself out just yet!
-
Are there any hidden costs? Not at all! The price we quote is the price you pay. Everything—including your chosen design, finishes, and any selected upgrades—is included in your final quote. The only additional cost to consider is the connection of the power supply from your home to the garden room. This varies depending on your property, but our on-site electrician can provide a separate quote, or you’re welcome to use your own. No surprises—just honest pricing.
-
How much deposit is required?Once we've agreed on your garden room specification and start date, we ask for a 50% deposit at least four weeks before the build begins. This secures your installation slot and allows us to order key materials in advance. Another 25% is due halfway through the build, with the final 25% payable on the day of completion—but only when you’re 100% happy with your finished garden room.
-
Can I live in a garden room without planning permission?Garden rooms are generally designed for use as home offices, studios, gyms, or chill-out spaces—not as full-time living accommodation. Under Permitted Development Rights, most garden rooms don’t require planning permission, as long as they meet certain size and use criteria. However, if you plan to live in your garden room full-time (e.g., sleeping, cooking, or using it as a separate residence), you’ll likely need planning permission and building regulations approval, since that changes its classification. It's always best to check with your local planning authority if you're unsure or thinking about using your space in a more residential way.
-
How long will it take to build my garden room?As long as there are no unexpected obstacles along the way, we can have your garden room fully built in less than 6 weeks from the moment you accept our quote. We’ll work efficiently and keep you updated throughout the process to make sure everything runs smoothly!
-
What are the dimensions and construction details of my garden room walls? Our garden rooms are built to the internal square metre size you select, with walls approximately 230mm thick from internal plaster to external cladding. Here’s what makes up the wall structure, layer by layer: Plaster skimmed plasterboard on the inside for a smooth, finished surface. Vapour barrier to prevent moisture build-up and protect the integrity of the structure. 100mm Celotex insulated timber frame, offering twice the thermal value of traditional home insulation for superb heat retention and comfort. OSB (Oriented Strand Board), which adds extra strength and rigidity to the frame. Breathable weather-tight membrane that helps protect against the elements while allowing the walls to breathe. Dual-layered treated timber batten for additional durability and stability. External cladding, which provides both weather protection and a beautiful, finished look. This multi-layered approach ensures your garden room is energy-efficient, sturdy, and built to last!
-
What type of doors and windows are included? As standard, our garden rooms come with sleek Anthracite grey UPVC doors and windows, featuring double-glazed glass panels for excellent insulation and chrome handles for a touch of elegance. You can easily upgrade to aluminium variations for a more premium finish if you wish. You’ll find the exact door and window specifications, including size and style options, in the Room Range section on our website. But don’t worry—whether you prefer a different size, colour, or configuration, we’re happy to customise your doors and windows to suit your exact vision. Premium aluminium versions are also available on request.
-
Do I need planning permission for my garden room?Generally, garden rooms don’t require planning permission as long as they follow the permitted development rules. We’ve made these rules easy to understand, and you can find the detailed information here. If you’re still unsure about anything, feel free to get in touch with us, and we’ll be happy to help guide you through the process!
-
Permitted development rights?Building a garden office can significantly enhance the value of your home, but there are important factors that homeowners and potential buyers should keep in mind. In many cases, garden offices fall under permitted development rights, which means planning permission may not be required. However, specific criteria must be met for this to apply. Garden buildings eligible for permitted development typically include those that:· Single-storey with a maximum height of 2.5m (if within 2m of a boundary). · Not used as a separate living space (i.e. not a bedroom or full-time residence). · Located at the rear or side of the original house. · Takes up no more than 50% of the total land around the house. · No verandas, balconies, or raised platforms over 0.3m high.
-
Do I need planning permission if I want to add a toilet to my garden office?Providing permitted development rules are followed, there is no need for planning permission to install a garden office toilet at all.
