Where Fire Doors Are Required
Flats & Apartments: Entrance doors must be fire doors (usually FD30s). Commercial Buildings: Offices, schools, shops, and workplaces require fire doors in escape routes and between fire compartments. Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs): Fire doors are needed between habitable rooms, escape routes, and kitchens.

Fire Resistance Ratings​
FD30 = Withstands fire for 30 minutes. FD60 = Withstands fire for 60 minutes. The correct rating depends on building type, use, and layout.

Fire doors must be: Installed by a competent person. Supplied with certification showing they have been tested as a complete doorset. Fitted with approved components only (hinges, closers, locks, seals, etc.).

How to Spot if Your Fire Door Is Compliant​​
1. Check for a Certification Label or Plug
Look for a label or coloured plug (often found on the top edge of the door). This shows the door is fire-tested and certified.
2. Inspect the Gaps Around the Door
The gap between the door and frame should be 3–4mm — about the thickness of a £1 coin. Larger gaps may let smoke or fire through.
3. Look at the Seals
Intumescent and smoke seals should be fitted around the edges. If they’re missing, damaged, or painted over, the door may not perform in a fire.
4. Test the Self-Closing Mechanism
Fire doors should close firmly on their own from any angle. If the closer is missing, broken, or doesn’t fully shut the door, it needs attention.
5. Check the Hinges
There should be at least three metal hinges, all secure and fitted with the right screws. Hinges should not be loose, damaged, or painted over.
